Retired Gresham police officer exposed himself to coworkers, loses certification

A retired Gresham police lieutenant who exposed himself to co-workers pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor charge of first-degree official misconduct.

James Peninger, 50, admitted to exposing himself to three co-workers while on duty, according to court documents. He pleaded guilty at his arraignment hearing and was sentenced to 18 months of probation with some stipulations by Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Eric J. Bergstrom.

Peninger retired in September 2016 after nearly 23 years with the Gresham police.

Peninger agreed to undergo sex offender treatment if it is recommended after evaluation, though he won’t have to register as a sex offender.

He is not allowed contact with the three victims and voluntarily relinquished his police certification through the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training. He also must also perform 80 hours of community service at a charity of his choice.

Peninger is allowed to live out of state during his probation.

A spokesman for the Gresham Police Department said the agency had no comment. Oregon State Police investigated the case.
