The relationship between police officers and community members in one San Jose neighborhood used to be plagued with distrust, but that’s slowly changing thanks to a new communication tactic. Damian Trujillo reports.

A San Jose police officer was arrested Tuesday in connection with providing intel to Vietnamese street gangs, according to an internal San Jose Police Department memo obtained by NBC Bay Area.

Officer Derrick Antonio was arrested on five felony counts of unauthorized computer access and one felony count of accessory after the fact, the memo said.

The officer’s arrest came after a five-month-long investigation into a Vietnamese criminal street gang that resulted in 21 arrest warrants, including Antonio’s, and 33 search warrants, the memo said.

The gang is believed to be involved in numerous crimes, including assault, extortion, narcotics, bookmaking, public corruption and illegal gambling, according to a department release Tuesday. Gang members frequently operated out of Vietnamese cafes and routinely extorted cafe owners through various means, the release said.

Antonio, a veteran of more than nine years, was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on Tuesday.

San Jose police Chief Eddie Garcia has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday at 3 p.m. at police headquarters to discuss the arrests in what has been dubbed “Operation Gang of Thrones.” He will be joined by agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

On Wednesday, Mayor Sam Liccardo didn’t say much other than to stand by the department.
