Officials: Monroe cop asked for oral sex

Wilmington Police Department Capt. Faheem Akil discusses compliance during a police stop.

MONROE – A Monroe Township police officer allegedly tried to trade a police favor for oral sex, officials said Monday.

Officer Robert E. Marzi, 29, now faces official misconduct charges, said the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office.

Marzi is suspended from the Monroe Township police department without pay. A complaint against him was signed on Aug. 10. He was placed on administrative leave Monday, the prosecutor’s office reported.

The two-year veteran is accused of “unauthorized exercise of his official functions with the purpose to obtain a benefit to himself” in January, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Marzi allegedly promised a woman he would help her with pending criminal charges in exchange for oral sex, according to the criminal complaint against him.

“It is deeply regretful that a member of the Monroe Township Police Department has been charged with a crime,” Police Chief John McKeown said in a statement released through the prosecutor’s office.

“Like all persons accused of a criminal act, this officer is entitled to due process of the law. I expect this to take time.”

Marzi turned himself in after learning of the signed complaint, according to prosecutor’s office spokesman Bernie Weisenfeld.

The officer was released from jail on $25,000 bail.

Prosecutor’s office investigators are reviewing other arrests in which Marzi was involved, officials said.

The township will continue to cooperate with the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office and will conduct its own administrative investigation, the police chief said.

Marzi was hired by the department in June 2014, earning $45,000 annually, according to state pension records.

A post on the department’s Facebook page announced his hiring. He and three more officers completed the Atlantic County Police Academy on June 12, 2014. Marzi finished first in his class in firearms qualifications and second in emergency vehicles operations, according to the department’s post.
