The Pender County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint early Saturday that Deputy Melvin Acevedo, 42, acted inappropriately toward a female while answering a call for service the night before.

The complaint immediately turned into an internal investigation, where it was determined that Acevedo violated Pender County Sheriff’s Office Policies 1.01 (General Conduct), 1.02 (Conduct Towards the Public), and had apparently violated state law.

Acevedo was fired that same day.

At the request of District Attorney Ben David and Pender County Sheriff Carson Smith, the SBI began their investigation, which resulted in Acevedo’s arrest in Jacksonville.

According to arrest warrants, Acevedo is accused of putting his hand into the female’s pants and groping her. The document also stated he slapped her buttocks.

He was charged with assault on a female, sexual battery and willfully failing to discharge duties. He was given a $5,000 unsecured bond.

Acevedo was hired as a patrol deputy in September 2015, a position he served until his termination.
