Minnesota Trooper Previously Named DWI All-Star Arrested for DWI

June 03, 2016 09:24 PM

The Minnesota State Patrol says a trooper suspected of driving while impaired has been put on leave pending the outcome of criminal and internal investigations.

Lt. Tiffani Nielson says Sgt. Chris Daas was arrested by Fridley police at 3 a.m. Thursday while off-duty and in his personal vehicle.

He was named a DWI All-Star in 2008 after making 123 drunk driving arrests.

Charges by the Fridley City Attorney are pending, Nielson says.

“State Troopers are dedicated to removing impaired drivers from the road, and that’s why this incident is disturbing, Col. Matt Langer, Chief of the Minnesota State Patrol, said in a statement. Chris Daas’ alleged behavior does not reflect our core values as an organization, nor does it demonstrate our expectations for troopers, whether on- or off-duty.”

Daas has been a trooper since March of 2004 and has had one complaint that resulted in a five-day suspension for conduct in 2011, according to Nielson. Daas has received one lifesaving award, one meritorious service award and one letter of commendation, she added.
