ROSSFORD, Oh. (WNWO) — A Rossford police officer has been charged with domestic violence after reportedly assaulting a family member over the weekend in front of other police officers.

Officer Erik Thompson was arraigned Tuesday in Perrysburg Municipal Court after police say he assaulted his father, James Johnson, who was being detained after crashing his car at the intersection of Oregon road and Fremont Pike, in Perrysburg, Saturday night.

Thompson’s father was being held for suspicion of O.V.I. in the back of a Perrysburg patrol car when his son arrived on the scene. According to court documents, Officer Thompson then disobeyed orders from a Perrysburg sergeant when he was told to “calm down.” He then walked over and opened the patrol car door and punched his father in the head. Thompson then got into his Rossford patrol car and left the scene.

According to court documents obtained by the NBC 24 Investigates team, Officer Erik Thompson was on duty in a Rossford police uniform at the time of the incident.

Thompson is charged with first degree misdemeanor domestic violence and has been placed on unpaid administrative leave, pending an internal city investigation.

NBC 24 did reach out to the city of Rossford’s attorney for a comment, but our call was not returned.
