A Wilson County Sheriff’s Office deputy has been fired and arrested on charges of sex crimes against a 16-year-old.

Joseph R. Patton, 45, who was a civil service process server prior to his termination Thursday is charged with 10 counts of aggravated sexual battery by an authority figure and 10 counts of especially aggravated sexual exploitation of a minor, police said.

Patton was arrested Monday without incident. His bail was $45,000 bond with conditions, police said. Patton was a 24-year veteran of the Wilson County Sheriff’s Office, according to the department.

The charges stem from incidents that allegedly occurred in late 2015 at Patton’s home when he was off-duty, the sheriff’s department said.

“Once the allegations were reported, a criminal investigation was conducted with the assistance of the District Attorney’s Office and presented to the Wilson County Grand Jury who returned with the indictments,” Wilson County Sheriff Robert Bryan said. “We take all allegations against our personnel seriously, and we acted swiftly to thoroughly investigate and prosecute this complaint.”

Patton’s initial arrangement date is scheduled Oct. 7.
