Patrick LaPlante, 50, of the 3000 block of 121st Street, was indicted by a Lucas County grand jury on the charge, which is a first-degree misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail.

Lucas County Common Pleas Judge Ruth Ann Franks told him he also could face five years of probation and a $1,000 fine. Mr. LaPlante also agreed to pay $900 restitution.

Mr. LaPlante retired Oct. 7 after 28 years with the sheriff’s department and after the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was asked to look into the missing money. Because of his retirement, no administrative charges were brought and defense attorney Pete Rost said his public pension will not be affected.

Mr. LaPlante is scheduled to be sentenced May 9
