Former Utah police officer pleads guilty to sexual conduct with a teen

A former Unified Police Department officer pleaded guilty Friday to three counts of unlawful conduct with a 17-year-old girl.

Regan Anson is scheduled to be sentenced May 6 by 3rd District Judge Katie Bernards-Goodman. The maximum sentence for each count is zero to 5 years behind bars, although Salt Lake County prosecutors are recommending probation, not prison time,

Anson, 26, was originally charged with five counts of second-degree felony forcible sexual abuse, but those were amended to the lesser, unlawful conduct charges in exchange for his plea.

The agreement also allows for a further reduction of the charges to a class A misdemeanor if Anson completes probation without getting into further trouble.

In his plea, Anson admitted to engaging in sex acts with the victim in September 2015. Charging documents in the case say the girl was under 18 and Anson was seven or more years older “and in a position of special trust, and therefore [the victim] could not legally consent to the conduct.”

UPD investigators discovered evidence of the relationship in October while investigating unrelated case and immediately asked Salt Lake City police to step in. Anson, who had been with the department for seven months, was arrested within 48 hours and fired.

The Salt Lake City police investigation found Anson met the girl while he was on duty and in uniform and knew how old she was.
