OKLAHOMA CITY — Jurors have found a former Oklahoma City police officer guilty on 18 counts and not guilty on 18 counts at the conclusion of a sex-crimes trial that has lasted well more than a month.Attorneys for the defense and prosecution, as well as court personnel and observers, began returning to the courtroom at the Oklahoma County Courthouse shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday.The verdicts were announced around 8:30 p.m.The defendant, Daniel Holtzclaw, 29, of Oklahoma City, was accused of sexual offenses against 13 black women between December 2013 and June 2014 while he was a police officer. He was fired in January.
He was charged with 36 counts, including six counts of first-degree rape. If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.Holtzclaw was visibly upset and nervous while waiting for the judge and jurors to return to the courtroom. Once the judge began reading the jury’s verdict forms, the defendant wept audibly, rocking back and forth in his chair.The first verdict — on a sexual battery charge — was guilty, with jurors recommending an eight-year sentence. The verdicts were mixed on the remaining 35 counts.In all, Holtzclaw was found guilty on six counts of sexual battery, with eight years recommended on each count; three counts of procuring a lewd exhibition, with five years recommended on each count; four counts of forcible oral sodomy, with 20 years recommended on one of the counts and 16 years on each of the other three counts; four counts of first-degree rape, with 30 years recommended on each count; and one count of second-degree rape by instrumentation, with 12 years recommended.He was found not guilty on two counts of rape, one count of rape by instrumentation, four counts of sexual battery, three counts of forcible oral sodomy, five counts of procuring a lewd exhibition, and single counts of stalking, burglary and indecent exposure.
